Bringing maternity care to the
Alleghany Highlands.
Why what we do matters
1
Maternity Care Desert
There are seven million women who live in a Maternity Care Desert, without local access to OB providers, Labor and Delivery units, and a proportion of women without health insurance. Alleghany County and most of our surrounding counties are among those. See more statistics here.
2
Local Care
From our research, we estimate at least 98.6% of families are driving an hour or more to access maternity care. Having resources, birth, and lactation access in town means you can be seen quickly, close to home.
3
Building Community
Maternal depression and anxiety rates are increasing. Rural families have an added challenge of geographical isolation and limited resources. Having a place to gather with others builds connection and a support system when it matters most.
We surveyed area moms and families to find that a) 70% of pregnant families felt limited in maternity care options and b) even though there was high interest in the services listed, there was extremely low participation. Most stated the drive to services was too far for them, a common barrier for rural families. Mountain Momma aims to offer those experiences locally to close the gap in services.
FAQs
How does MM specifically support or serve disadvantaged individuals or groups?
All classes and groups are free so that families always have access to care without financials being a barrier. The Support Closet also holds a monthly diaper drop off at two early learning centers (subsidized child care provider) and two Section 8 housing/apartment centers. By bringing the essential items to them, we are removing the transportation and childcare barrier to reach more families.
What programming is offered in result of the 2026 funding from Virginia Department of Health?
This funding could be divided into education and resources. Education classes include (Q) birth and labor options, (Q) lactation, (B) pelvic floor health, (B) pediatric CPR/First Aid. Two support groups were added: (M) postpartum mental health and (Q) Pregnancy and Infancy Loss. It also covered training costs for two State Approved Doulas, two IBCLCs, and five Car Seat Safety Technicians. Resources include “big ticket” items for the Support Closet, lactation education and support materials, and postpartum supplies.
B= bi-annually, Q= quarterly, M= monthly
How can I donate?

Financial donations can be made on our Give Local Alleghany page. Thank you so much for your support!
