Bringing maternity care to the

Alleghany Highlands.

Why what we do matters

1

Maternity Care Desert

There are seven million women who live in a Maternity Care Desert, without local access to OB providers, Labor and Delivery units, and a proportion of women without health insurance.

2

Local Care

From our research, we estimate at least 98.6% of families are driving an hour or more to access maternity care. Having providers in town means you can be seen quickly, close to home.

3

An Alternative Approach

The midwifery care model acknowledges that the pregnant person is in control of their body and medical decisions. You will always receive informed choice and be asked for your consent. No exceptions.

We surveyed area moms and families to find that a) 70% of pregnant families felt limited in maternity care options and b) even though there was high interest in the services listed, there was extremely low participation. Most stated the drive to services was too far for them. Mountain Momma aims to offer those experiences in the Alleghany Highlands to meet those needs.

FAQs

Do you offer payment plans?

Clients may choose to complete payment upfront or payment plan. Those opting for a payment plan must make a payment of any amount over $30 once a month, with the total due in full by the last scheduled prenatal visit before birth.

Is homebirth safe?

Midwifery care is increasing in the United States, increasing 12% in 2021. Homebirth has a lower rate of cesarean, lower rates of infection, and lower maternity mortality rates when compared to hospitals. A 2019 study stated, “Greater integration of midwifery care into maternity services in the United States may reduce intervention in labor and potentially even cesarean delivery, in low-risk pregnancies” (Souter, 2019).

I’m birthing in a hospital setting. Can I still hire a doula?

Having a doula can drastically change your birth and postpartum experience, no matter the birth setting! Research shows that individuals who use a birth doula have better outcomes, including 28% less likely to have a caesarean, 31% less likely to request Pitocin, and 34% less likely to report a negative birth experience!

I would like to get involved or donate to the financial assistance fund. How do I do that?

We are setting up an account at First Citizens Bank in Clifton Forge to accept monetary contributions, check back soon! We would also appreciate donations of space to hold classes, recommend families to our service, and share about what we are doing in the community! If you have experience in grant writing, accounting, or other services, we would love your help in those areas. We may know birth and women’s health, but other areas of running a nonprofit are new to us. Any assistance would be appreciated!

"The foundation of our mission is to make birth accessible for all and that starts with providing quality maternity care and pouring into our community through low-cost classes and services."
