Bringing maternity care to the
Alleghany Highlands.
Why what we do matters
1
Maternity Care Desert
There are seven million women who live in a Maternity Care Desert, without local access to OB providers, Labor and Delivery units, and a proportion of women without health insurance. Alleghany County and most of our surrounding counties are among those.
2
Local Care
From our research, we estimate at least 98.6% of families are driving an hour or more to access maternity care. Having resources, birth, and lactation access in town means you can be seen quickly, close to home.
3
Building Community
Maternal depression and anxiety rates are increasing. Rural families have an added challenge of geographical isolation and limited resources. Having a place to gather with others builds connection and a support system when it matters most.
We surveyed area moms and families to find that a) 70% of pregnant families felt limited in maternity care options and b) even though there was high interest in the services listed, there was extremely low participation. Most stated the drive to services was too far for them. Mountain Momma aims to offer those experiences in the Alleghany Highlands to meet those needs.
FAQs
Do your doulas offer payment plans?
Clients may choose to complete payment upfront or payment plan. Those opting for a payment plan must make a payment of any amount over $50 once a month, with the total due in full by the last scheduled prenatal visit before birth.
What does a lactation session look like?
We do our best to align sessions with baby’s feeding schedule to allow your lactation counselor to observe latch and help with feeding techniques. Our counselors will ask questions to get an understanding of your goals and challenges. While baby feeds, we provide advice and support. If you need assistance with a pump or have other questions as well, make sure to let us know prior to the session.
I’m birthing in a hospital setting. Can I still hire a doula?
Having a doula can drastically change your birth and postpartum experience, no matter the birth setting! Research shows that individuals who use a birth doula have better outcomes, including 28% less likely to have a caesarean, 31% less likely to request Pitocin, and 34% less likely to report a negative birth experience!
"The foundation of our mission is improve infant and maternal health and that starts with providing quality maternity care and pouring into our community through accessible classes and services."
